The butterfly motif is a cornerstone of De’VIA (Deaf View Image Art), a powerful visual language that celebrates Deaf culture and identity. Inspired by this tradition, I sought to create a collection of bugs as my motif, exploring how their communication behaviors can metaphorically represent the Deaf community and my personal spirituality.

This captivating acrylic painting invites viewers into a whimsical and thought-provoking exploration of communication and the hidden depths of language. A large, open mouth, rendered in vibrant red, serves as the canvas for a mesmerizing carousel of ghostly white horses. The horses, reminiscent of childhood memories and the innocence of oralism, dance in a circular motion within the dark recesses of the mouth. This juxtaposition of the playful carousel and the somber black void creates a visual metaphor for the challenges of lip-reading. The viewer is left to ponder the fragmented nature of communication, where only a small percentage of words or conversations are truly captured.

The image underscores the unnecessary barriers created by a world dominated by oral communication. Countless Deaf people have experienced the harmful effects of oralism and audism, highlighting the urgent need for greater accessibility and acceptance of sign language.
